The battle was set at Red Cliffs, a location with its back to the Yangtze River. The Southern lords employed a brilliant strategy. They baited Cao Cao's navy into a narrow part of the river, cramped with ships chained together, supposedly to prevent seasickness.

What followed was one of history's most famous naval maneuvers. Huang Gai, a general under Sun Quan, pretended to defect to Cao Cao's side, sending forth a squadron of ships. These ships were filled with flammable materials. They were set alight as they approached Cao Cao's navy, turning into fire ships that targeted the chained enemy fleet.

The fire attack worked perfectly. The chained ships turned into a sea of flames, throwing Cao Cao's troops into chaos and severely crippling his forces. Seizing the opportunity, the allied forces launched a counterattack, defeating Cao Cao's disoriented army and turning the tide of the war.
